Foggy Morning Shoot with Bella, Melissa Sheets, NC Photographer

This weekend I woke up to a complete blanket of dense fog coverage in my little city of Lexington. I sent out a few feelers to see if any other photographers wanted to go out and shoot.... no luck, but the nagging feeling to go wouldn't leave me alone.

On New Year's Eve I found a vintage green jacket at the Antique emporium in Thomasville. That jacket plus my niece Bella gave me the idea for Saturday morning's session. Odie was a last minute addition, but I think it made the shoot so special. Odie is a rescue from the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Bella's family has been working with him in obedience classes and he as turned into the sweetest giant.

The feel of these images is a little outside of my normal shooting style. Usually I love to blow out backgrounds, shoot tight and bright. But for these, since it was family and just play I decided to go for a darker look. That's what is great about these sessions, the play, the push, the knowing that they don't have to be spectacular.

These images were all it with a video light. If I could go back, it would have been great to pop a little flash in for rim light, and maybe even one or two inside the grain bins. There is always next time :)

Sometimes we book a wedding a year in advance, even two years in advance. But sometimes we connect with a Bride and Groom just weeks before their wedding. Such is the case for Helen and Wojtek.... and our experience with them was impeccable.

Spencer and I have worked on so many weddings together, but we remember each one. They become little pieces of the puzzle that makes up our photography world. So many times we will think back and laugh about a groomsmen's toasts, or giggle remembering when Spencer got sprayed with a water hose, by a young ring bearer. We remember with compassion the father daughter dances that turn into tears, and we think about the "last photographs" of grandparents who hung on just to see their grandchild walk down the isle. When you hire a wedding photographer, you aren't just hiring someone with a camera. Instead you are hiring a professional that will preserve your memories and hand them to you in the form of photographs.

Through the years we have been blessed to witness the unions of so many sweet souls. This was a perfect wedding to end the year. Helen and Wojtek.....THANK YOU!!!! Your images will be ready for pick up next week.

Christmas Portraits at Wella Farm. Lexington NC Melissa Sheets

This fashionable family has been in front of my camera every year for FIVE years. I have so many reasons to feel loved. Returning clients are near the top of my list. Sharing time with families year after year, watching their children grow, and the immense satifaction of knowing that these families keep choosing me, AGAIN AND AGAIN. My heart is full, my camera is always in motion... I am so thankful for all the busy days filled with going where my camera leads me.

A couple years ago I began my photography relationship with the Bowers. Gus was a jumping bean full of energy and Brecken was just a tiny guy. Each time they left a session, I am pretty sure their mom seriously doubted that we got anything good. I've always ended up with lots of cool images from  their sessions, but this one has been my FAVORITE to date.

Littles can be exhausting work for parents at a portrait session, it is so rewarding to see this phase kick in when parents can relax and trust that good images can come from just playing.

Mom and Dad Bowers, I hope you'll love these images as much as I do. This session is all boy! from the fields of soy beans that Dad grows, to the barns, lawn mowers and old dusty trucks. I hope a few of these will end up as canvases on your walls. These are the smiles, scratch that... THESE ARE THE MEMORIES you'll cherish as your babies grow.

Thank you for allowing Spencer and I to shoot with you again.

WOW. What a day. Today Spencer and I had the extreme pleasure to spend the day with Rosa and Craig. I met this couple only last week when they dropped by my house to sign a wedding contract a WEEK BEFORE THE WEDDING. You know that instant click that happens between souls? The one that makes you feel like you've just encountered someone whom you could be fast friends with? Well, I felt that click the minute this couple sat on my porch.

Rosa has a smile that could seriously stop traffic. When I say that we were honored to be their wedding photographers, I say that with complete sincerity. The way Craig looks at Rosa is story book perfection. These weddings, these moments, this is what keeps wedding photographers happy.

ROSA AND CRAIG- from the bottom of our hearts, we wish you a guys a lifetime of happiness!!

Newborn

I first met Lindsay several years ago when she did some modeling for a local boutique. I was immediately struck by her elegance and kindness. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to have her in-front of my camera multiple times. When She contacted me for newborn portraits.... I WAS ECSTATIC.

Baby Taylor was the sweetest little man for his session. I adored spending time with one of the city's newest citizens.

Ben and Regan's spectacular Summer Camp wedding weekend. Melissa Sheets and Spencer Reudelhuber, NC Wedding Photographers

It's here!!! Last year when Ben and Regan told me they planned on getting married at a summer camp.... I WAS THRILLED! Some of my best childhood memories are from camp, I knew this was going to be an awesome day.

Surrounded by dense forest Camp Pinnacle is a dream wedding location. The lake was a serene backdrop for the ceremony. I'm somewhat surprised that Ben didn't talk Regan into getting married on a Bass boat while floating on the lake. (That would have been a first for me :)) Instead they said "I DO" in-front of family and friends as the sun escaped behind the trees, overlooking a glorious lake at the base of a mountain, with little bits of sparkle light from the sunset dancing on the water. Can you image it? It was stunning.

Here are just a handful of images from the day. I can't wait to share more.

Regan and Ben, I was honored to be a part of the wedding. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. Most of all though, thank you for your friendship.

XOXO, Melissa

I get a lot of questions from new moms. Most commonly when scheduling a newborn session, parents ask if they should host the shoot in their home or at the studio. I like both (mostly because either way means I'll get to hold and snuggle a newbie) but I have to admit that there is something so special about sessions inside a space that is meaningful to the family.

Just think, as years go by and you look back at those little lashes, and sweet pick toes, you'll also catch glimpses of the house that your baby called home. Scheduling the session in your home creates more than just pretty portraits. It creates memories that you'll keep forever.

HUGE thank you to Carter's Mom and Dad for hosting Spencer and me. We really enjoyed meeting your family of three.

My friends Lisa and Dave have been blessed with a new cutie pie. These little joys are the cherry on-top of a career that I LOVE. Last year I decided to stop photographing newborns for a few months and instead focus on a different aspect of building the studio. I am glad I finally came back to my senses!!!! What was I thinking passing up the chance to see the beauty of a new life?

Kazie and Sean

These two. They chose one of my very favorite wedding venues and filled it with timeless beauty and genuinely fun and sincere guests.  We had such a good time with Sean and Kazie. My favorite part of the night.... watching Kazie's Grandma dance her heart out on the dance floor.

Simply loved shooting through Kazie's veil. Which is a family heirloom.
